132kV 50MW BESS in East Anglia
Between Q2 & Q4 of 2022 Energy 101 were pleased to be engaged by one of the UK’s market-leading EPC contractors, Smith Brothers Contracting to deliver a new 132kV-connected 50MW Large-Scale Battery Energy Storage Scheme [BESS]. The scheme itself comprised 28-in-number 2MW BYD battery containers, associated PCS units & 400/33kV step-up transformers, private & DNO distribution switchgear facilities and associated other works.
The site itself was handed over to Energy 101 at the commencement of build-out. Consequently, our team were responsible for setting up the site in accordance with the most recent CDM regulations prior to the commencement of delivery works. Taking this scheme on at the outset meant we were one again required to manage
and deliver a multi-disciplinary scope of works. At the outset, these works included initial site clearance and grading, large-scale civil works to create asset foundations, bunding, access routes & roadways and the creation of sub-level cable duct routes. Upon completion of these initial stages Energy 101 were then responsible for the management of asset delivery & emplacement and all cabling, connectivity aspects. This second stage of scheme delivery also included management of the 132kV ICP contestable works including associated procurement & delivery of the requisite Power Transformer and DNO-approved 132kV cabling.
The effective management of stakeholders from both and internal and external perspective was a key component to successful delivery on this scheme. A key challenge on this scheme was managing the due-diligence process with the local DNO regards the selection and implementation of compliant equipment for the 132kV connection. This was a challenging & sensitive process that was successfully and competently delivered by the Energy 101 team
